This is my research which ultimately led me to the production of my 10 'Freeze' letterforms.
Definitions of freeze on the Web:
- stop moving or become immobilized; "When he saw the police car he froze"
- change to ice; "The water in the bowl froze"
- be cold; "I could freeze to death in this office when the air conditioning is turned on"
- cause to freeze; "Freeze the leftover food"
- stop a process or a habit by imposing a freeze on it; "Suspend the aid to the war-torn country"
- be very cold, below the freezing point; "It is freezing in Kalamazoo"
- the withdrawal of heat to change something from a liquid to a solid
- prohibit the conversion or use of (assets); "Blocked funds"; "Freeze the assets of this hostile government"
- weather cold enough to cause freezing
- anesthetize by cold
- an interruption or temporary suspension of progress or movement; "a halt in the arms race"; "a nuclear freeze"
- suddenly behave coldly and formally; "She froze when she saw her ex-husband"
- fixing (of prices or wages etc) at a particular level; "a freeze on hiring"
Ice Sculptures
One of my first thoughts associated with the word 'Freeze' was the concept of ice and snow sculptures, so I began researching. I found these amazing sculptures; each one hand crafted with immense intricacy to give the finest detailing.
Fun Ice Cubes
As I have been thinking about ice, I decided to look into ice cubes and any creative ways they have been used. I particularly like the way in which they have been used as a viewing device through which the ice has the ability to magnify the advertisement.
I particularly like this as it shows the stages of the melting ice takes. If this had not been presented as a series but instead individual images, the last image would most certainly be unrecognisable. This demonstrates the importance of a 'series' within certain work. Something for me think about in the creation of my letterforms.
Definitions of ice on the Web:
- water frozen in the solid state; "Americans like ice in their drinks"
- the frozen part of a body of water
- diamonds; "look at the ice on that dame!"
- frosting: a flavored sugar topping used to coat and decorate cakes
- a frozen dessert with fruit flavoring (especially one containing no milk)
- frost: decorate with frosting; "frost a cake"
- methamphetamine: an amphetamine derivative (trade name Methedrine) used in the form of a crystalline hydrochloride; used as a stimulant to the nervous system and as an appetite suppressant
- cause to become ice or icy; "an iced summer drink"
- internal-combustion engine: a heat engine in which combustion occurs inside the engine rather than in a separate furnace; heat expands a gas that either moves a piston or turns a gas turbine
- put ice on or put on ice; "Ice your sprained limbs"
- ice rink: a rink with a floor of ice for ice hockey or ice skating; "the crowd applauded when she skated out onto the ice"

Patterns in Ice
'Hoar frost is formed when water vapor from the air sublimes on a very cold surface. The permanent freezing, resubliming and refreezing can produce very large structures. The crystals shown below were as large as 40 mm and nicely show on a very large scale the hexagonal structure of water ice, based on the hexagonal atomic structure of ice. They had formed on the surface of a frozen lake. A nearby creek with open water was one of the sources of the humidity.'
Colours in Frost'Large symmetric and transparent hoar frost crystals can refract and disperse sunlight. It was sufficient to move my head very slightly to view all colours of the rainbow from ruby red to emerald in the crystals shown.'
As a result of seeing a lot of crafted ice, I decided to look at ice itself. I managed to find an entire website dedicated to ice and it's formations; the imagery was inspiring. These are some immensely intricate patterns that can be seen within the ice under telescopic conditions. Viewing these has made me begin to think about incorporating these formations into my letterforms somehow.
Molecular Structure of Ice
The microscopic structures I saw previously led me towards looking into the molecular structures of ice.I am intrigued by how I can use these patterns to create various letterforms.
Typography in Ice
After creating 'typography in water' it was decided that this creative company would produce the series 'typography in ice' to explore what 'visual oddities' arose as a result of it. Personally, I think these result are of immense intrigue and truly communicate this 'freeze' concept that i am being asked to. Consequently, I have experiment with freezing typography myself; this can be found on my 'design practice' blog.
